Things to know about EV batteries

As you might be aware already, batteries are one of the essential components of Electric Vehicles. However, from the advent of the first Electric Vehicle, batteries have been a costly affair in the EV industry, and charging them most conveniently has always been an enormous hurdle to pass for all leading automakers.

The Present demand for EV Batteries

EV cars sales are on the rise as we talk about them at this point. With large manufacturers already switching to hybrid vehicles and more electric vehicle makers coming into the market, EV has seen an unexpected bloom despite the pandemic. However, along with the surge in sales, the demand has also hit the roof, and the supply chain issues are very evident. It, in turn, affects the prices of EV batteries, making them even more expensive.

EV Batteries – Raw components

A form of carbon called graphite is predominantly employed in manufacturing the negative terminal in cells, called the anode. Almost 90% of the anode production is concentrated in China, followed by Japan and India. Unfortunately, when it comes to EV batteries, they always revolve around these metals that are hard to procure.

  • Lithium (Lithium Iron Phosphate)
  • Cobalt   (Nickel Cobalt Manganese)

But, with recent trends, one can see a demand for even the most basic materials like graphite. With EV giants selling many green vehicles, all raw components used in the production of batteries have witnessed a jump in their prices by three times.

Artificial synthesis of raw materials

All the materials mentioned above are naturally occurring elements, but industry leaders have switched to synthetic production on parallel lines with high demand around the corner. Unfortunately, synthetically built graphite’s prices are also soaring high, and this last year has recorded a 6% increase in the costs, despite the most significant producers’ efforts to minimize the cost of graphitization. If the prices of the raw materials keep rising, the supply chains will get hit very badly, and the industry might lose out on a lot of potential buyers. Hence, researchers are looking at all possible ways to innovate the production of batteries in EVs.
